Day 2 - What is argument? Why should we spend time reading and writing arguments?
Reading assignment: Chapters 3 and 4 in Aims
Week 2 - January 28 and 30
Day 1 - Reading and annotating arguments
Reading and writing assignment: Read and annotate pp. 201-207; read pp. 44-45, 59-60, and 584-590 in Aims.
Day 2 - Summarizing arguments.
Reading and writing assignment: Read and summarize pp. 218-225 (Postrel) in Aims.
Week 3 - February 4 and 6
Day 1 - Toulmin analysis
Reading and writing assignment: Read and annotate pp. 208-211; read and summarize 213-216 (Hynes) in Aims.
Day 2 - Toulmin continued
Reading and writing assignment: Read and do Toulmin analysis of 227-232 (Collard) in Aims.
Week 4 - February 11 and 13
Day 1 - Summary and response.
Assignment: Revise summary and response.
Day 2 - Workshop for portfolio 1
Assignment: Select and begin revising pieces for portfolio 1. Read Appendix B in Aims.
Week 5 - February 18 and 20
Day 1 - Workshop for portfolio 1.
Assignment: Prepare portfolio 1.
Day 2 - Portfolio 1 due. Finding and evaluating Internet sources.
Reading assignment: Chapter 6 and Appendix A in Aims
Week 6 - February 25 and 27
Day 1 - Introduction to portfolio 2. Arguing to convince.
Assignment: Think about possible topics you would like to focus on for arguments about the environment.
Day 2 - Finding and evaluating library sources. Rogerian argument.
Assignment: Find and summarize two additional sources on an environmental topic.
Week 7 - March 4 and 6
Day 1 - Reasons and evidence
Assignment: Draft an argument to convince.
Day 2 - Workshop on convincing paper.
Assignment: Think about what new sources you need to revise your convincing paper.
SPRING BREAK
Week 8 - March 18 and 20
Day 1 - Arguing to persuade. Appeals. Look again at Lame Deer/Erdoes and Postrel.
Reading assignment: Chapter 7 in Aims
Day 2 - Appeals. Look again at remaining pieces in environmental chapter.
Assignment: Do additional library work to find sources on your topic. Summarize two more sources.
Week 9 - March 25 and 27
Day 1 - Audience analysis for persuading essay.
Assignment: Complete audience analysis.
Day 2 - Reconsidering your appeals.
Assignment: Draft an argument to persuade.
Week 10 - April 1 and 3
Day 1 - Documenting sources.
Assignment: Revise argument to persuade.
Day 2 - Workshop on argument to persuade.
Assignment: Jot down revision plan for persuading essay.
Week 11 - April 8 and 10
Day 1 - Workshop on convincing essay.
Assignment: Revise convincing essay.
Day 2 - Workshop on persuading essay.
Assignment: Revise persuading essay.
Week 12 - April 15 and 17
Day 1 - Final workshop for portfolio 2.
Assignment: Polish pieces for portfolio 2.
Day 2 - Portfolio 2 due.
Reading assignment: Chapter 8 in Aims
Week 13 - April 22 and 24
Day 1 - Mediating and negotiating. Select topics and create groups.
Reading assignment: Read appropriate chapter in Aims. Summarize at least one essay.
Review pp. 44-45 and 59-60 in Aims. (Be sure to keep all your work on this topic for the individual portion of portfolio 3.)
Day 2 - Group work
Assignment: Summarize or complete a Toulmin analysis of one additional essay from your topic chapter.
Do library or Internet searching as necessary for your topic. (Be sure to keep a log of your work for the individual portion of portfolio 3.)
Week 14 - April 29 and May 1
Day 1 - Group work
Assignment: Begin drafting mediating/negotiating essay.
Day 2 - Group work
Assignment: Complete drafting mediating/negotiating essay.
Week 15 - May 6 and 8
Day 1 - Final workshop on portfolio 3.
Assignment: Prepare portfolio 3.
Day 2 - Portfolio 3 due. Evaluations.
Final class during scheduled time in finals week
