- Understanding the role of audience in writing and how audiences differ

- Selecting appropriate strategies for responding to an idea
- Clearly stating points they want to make about an idea
- Focusing their discussion of those points

- Organizing the exploration of an idea
- Reading and critiquing peers' writing (workshopping)
