Nicole Backens earned her MFA in fiction at Colorado State Univeristy in 2004. Her short story, "The Disciple of Because," was selected on the national level as a winner of the AWP Intro Journal Awards, and will appear in Shenandoah. Her story, "Radio Waves" was chosen by the fiction faculty at Colorado State University as a nominee for the Best New American Voices 2006 short story competition.
