Not on the map: too small. Just off the highway between Glenwood and Red Oak, between the forking legs of the Nishnabotna River. Once 2,000 strong; now smaller. Two hundred years ago this land was prairie, the sough grass higher than a man's head. So they say. Helen, staring across the terraced fields from her bedroom in the middle of the town at the crest of the hill, repeats this to herself but cannot believe it.
