REFORMATION OF THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE:
Putting the People's Choice Back into Democracy

he first Tuesday of November, also known as Election Day, marks an important time for our nation. A time in which American citizens will embark to the nearest poll booth and place a vote for a presidential candidate in hopes of that person becoming our nation's next leader. Yet, as confirmed by the outcome of the 2000 presidential election, the voice of the people has little affect on who is elected president.


With previous presidential elections, one thing's for certain and that is the fact that the Electoral College does not produce the people's president. With our current election process there is the increased likelihood for a candidate to win the popular vote and yet, still lose the constitutional votes of the Electoral College. Many American citizens find it strange that the people's choice through means of popular vote does not coincide with the electoral votes of the state. Such instances cause division among political parties as well as he first Tuesday of November, also known as Election Day, marks an important time for our nation. Many American citizens find it strange that the people's choice through means of popular vote does not coincide with the electoral votes of the state. Such instances cause division among political parties as well as the American people. If one presidential candidate wins the popular vote while his opponent constitutionally receives the majority of the electoral vote, as well as the presidency, the American people are left with a sense of confusion and an inability to support and rely on such an imbalanced system.


Due to the Electoral College process, the votes of the American people are cast aside, leaving little impact on the presidential candidates or the result of the election. So just a few words of advice to my fellow Americans, before you head off to the polls thinking that your vote will actually make a difference, be sure to stop and considered how the process of electing our nation's president actually works. The unconstitutional method of the Electoral College has revolutionized that Tuesday in November to be a day when not the American voters, but, actually 538 state electors, will choose the presidential candidate that they wish to lead the United
