The American Way

Before I go any further, I must make it clear to you that there is nothing that we have or practice in the United States that I think is inherently evil. While I am at it, let's also clarify that there are things that are fundamentally wrong, regardless of your religion, value system, etc. Something like molesting children doesn't even need to come up as part of this discussion. Hopefully we can agree that those sorts of behaviors and desires have no place in any human society. They are there, but under no circumstances do we have to accept, excuse or support them. While I might have a problem with how much TV some of us watch, the application of capital punishment, the advertising media culture, or the current state of pop music, I do not believe that any of those things are inherently bad, nor should they be eliminated.

However, I do believe that in practice, much of what we value and do in the U.S.A involves extremes that make it very difficult for any of us to live a truly happy, authentic life. There needs to be an adjustment in our culture's overall system--our economic, religious, legal and political institutions.
