My friend Meghan had told me about a local rescue
organization and the great dog her friend had got from them.
Lifeline Puppy Rescue is a no-kill rescue whose members travel
all over Colorado, New Mexico and Kansas to collect unwanted litters of
puppies, usually under
12 weeks old, from individual owners or other rescues and shelters that
are not prepared to adequately care for or find proper homes for them.
People drive from all over to the weekend viewing and adoption
event. In 2002, Lifeline
found homes for 3000 mostly mixed breed puppies that would have
otherwise been euthanized. So
we drove down, just to look because we were
going to Breckenridge for the weekend the next week and wouldn’t have
wanted to leave a new puppy. We
were only there for ten minutes and I looked at Eric, who looked
pitifully back, and I said what we were both thinking, “Let’s go
home now or else I am going to have to take one of them with me.” It
was finally starting to feel real, like we really would get a dog.
I was nervous, but the rush of adrenaline I felt as we drove away
helped me push through it.
