The Taliban
This is the fundamentalist Islamic group that has been in the news lately because it destroyed massive, stone, 4th and 5th century Buddhas in their country. They consider them "an affront to Allah" and feel like their religious beliefs demand that they destroy them. These acts are second only to their daily efforts to destroy their own women.
The women of the Taliban are not allowed out of their homes without their traditional dress. It covers them from head to foot, only allowing their eyes to show. It is forbidden for them to be seen without this clothing, except for by their own husbands and young children. They cannot have jobs or go to school. No one but their own husbands can see them naked and out of their traditional clothing, so in many cases they are denied medical care because they cannot be properly examined by a doctor.
Can you imagine the despair these women feel? All of these changes are recent, in the last ten or fifteen years. There are women who were physicians and teachers that are now prisoners in their own homes. Can you imagine being one of them, looking into the eyes of your daughter and knowing that she might live her whole life in such a manner?
