Revision: literally re-vision, to re-see. When students revise, it is helpful if they understand the difference between local and global revision. Too often, students think they need to "edit" or locally revise their work after an early draft. But more typically, they, like us, need to rethink the work more fully and doing so can be referred to as "global" revision. Students can be helped by being encouraged to enter the difficult terrain of global revision; their willingness to do so should be understood for the act of courage that it is—and that all of us know it to be from our own experiences with reworking our writing.
