The great aunt I was sure I would love best. She'd know what I went through, with my ambitions and my perfectionisms. She who'd wanted to be a journalist, ended up a struggling untenured professor at a remote college. She was the oldest sister, the responsible one, the anxious pioneer.
She really went the farthest of any of us, Grandpa said, leaning into his cane and brushing a thin watery strand from the side of his chin.
Would she have understood, though? Or is she entirely my creation?
