i carry with me stones for luck, stones for protection. they slip between my fingers (glide across) my palm, beads maybe, i grew up with religion. one after another, thumb and forefinger, a chant in between (the gods are looking down) i carry them with me, remembering to listen, each time, to the quiet places, the cold stone underneath my skin. i know sometimes where to go.
