Alchemists were natural philosophers trying to discover the Philosopher's Stone, also known as the elixir or tincture. The stone was believed to be not only a transmuting agent, having the power to turn inferior material into gold, but also the key to knowledge, which could be used responsibly only by a wise person. Its power was both physical and spiritual.
