DAILY for 10-5

  1. What is the difference between arguing to convince and arguing to persuade? What is the "plus" you'll have to add to your convincing essay to make it persuasive? What appeals does Aims identify as appropriate for arguing to persuade? Which of these might be useful in your argument?
  2. Look carefully at the Kristol essay. What appeals does he use? Give specific analysis of the appeals. Why are these effective given the author's goals and audience for this essay? What would the author need to revise about these appeals to make the essay fully persuasive?
  3. Most effective arguments anticipate objections opponents to a claim might raise. What are the major opposition arguments you need to take account of as you argue about your topic? (Sketch at least three main opposition points.)
