Focus

For the Summary: Focus on condensing the article to its bare bones without missing any of its most important points. What is the author's claim--the main thing the author wants his or her audience to believe? What are the main reasons the author says his or her audience should believe that claim? What kinds of evidence does the author use to support each reason?

For the Response: Focus your response by making your own claim about the effectiveness of the article you summarized. Ask yourself questions such as, "Where does the argument hold up?" "Where does it break down and become less convincing?"
