Tips to Prevent students from Abusing Internet Research
Hold students accountable for the research they do:
- Require that they show evidence of their process--drafts, notes, revisions, materials found and rejected, sources used.
- Ask students to submit the sources they did not use in addition to the sources they did use, so you can check how well they are evaluating sites.
- Insist that students use more sources than they would for library research.
tell them not to stop too quickly and not to settle on the first site they find, since there is often much more valuable information out there, and that first site can open doors to more information.
- If you usually require 15 library sources, require at least 30 Web page sources.
