Skills Students Focus On

Back Back to Unit 1: Personal and Academic Writing

Some of the skills students will develop and refine in this unit include:

  • Identifying and using their own writing processes, rituals, and various presenting strategies
  • Reading the work of other authors critically
  • Understanding the role of audience in writing and how audiences differ
  • Revising for audience needs
  • Summarizing accurately and objectively
  • Selecting appropriate strategies for responding to an idea
  • Clearly stating points they want to make about an idea
  • Focusing their discussion of those points
  • Developing support for their points
  • Organizing the exploration of an idea
  • Reading and critiquing peers' writing (workshopping)
