One goal of this unit is to help students bridge the gap between their personal
experience and the writing they will be asked to do in college. It both provides
them with a sense of authority (their experiences can and do matter in college)
and begins to place their experience within a wider range of audiences and purposes
than they may have considered up to now. A second goal is to help students identify
and define rhetorical terms and strategies within their own and others' writing.
