Writing for the Web

Format Text and Images

Once you've created a basic Web page, you can begin to add content – text, images, and so on – to your document. HTML tags allow you to control the appearance and layout of the text and images on your pages. With a few exceptions (such as the break tag – <BR>), HTML uses pairs of tags to turn on and turn off an effect, such as the beginning and end of a paragraph, the beginning and end of a heading, or the beginning and end of boldfaced text.

In contrast, HTML uses a single <IMG> tag to control the placement and appearance of images.
