News and Updates: Fall 2008

Fall 2008

Guestbook:

  • You’ll notice when you log in to the Writing Studio and go to your Writing Page that there is now an icon for the new Guestbook feature, located just under the Calendar icon. Your Guestbook is a place where other Writing Studio users can post messages for you, and you & others can comment on those posts.
  • The only users who can access your guestbook have some specific connection to you through the Writing Studio. For example, you are in a class together, they have shared work with you, or they have asked you for comments on their work.
  • To access the guestbooks of those you are connected to, use the link located under the posts or comments they’ve made to your Guestbook. Or, use the link on their Writing Page, which you get to from your Classmates pages or any of the locations on your Writing Page where shared work is listed (in the Folders, Blogs, ePortfolios, or Comments tabs).

Assignment Dropbox:

  • Students can use the dropbox to upload a file for an assignment, but they can't see any of the files or the actual dropbox. All they see when they go to the dropbox is an add file form. This means that they can't remove their files from the dropbox once they’ve been added.
  • From the Dropbox’s instructor view, files are stored in assignment folders and instructors can move files from one folder to another if students add an assignment to the wrong folder. Instructors can also rename files to better identify and keep track of them, as well as delete files and assignment folders when finished working with them.

You can now upload files to your Personal Work Folders, found in the Folders tab of Your Writing Page, (with the option to view, share, update, move, or delete a file).

Updates to the Class File Folder: In this section of your class, you’ll now find

  • “Class Files and File Folders,” (with the option to add, view, remove, move, or delete a file). As before, both students and instructors are able to upload files to this area.
  • “Files for Groups,” (with the option to add or view a file, but only if you are a member of that class group).
  • “Personal Files for this Class,” (with the option to add, view, share with a classmate, add to assignment dropbox, rename, move, or delete a file). Students can add their own files for a class to this folder. Instructors don't see this folder. Students can also share these files with other writers in their class, and add these files directly to the assignment dropbox.
  • If someone has shared files with them, students will see a “Files Shared with You by Your Classmates” folder, (with the option to view file, view classmate’s page, or remove file access).

You can now make class calendar entries to multiple class calendars. This will be a help to those of you who teach multiple sections of the same class on the same days (MWF or TR). When you open the page to create a new calendar entry, you will see a list at the bottom of the page that includes all of your currently shown classes. Simply check the boxes for the classes where you’d like the entry to be posted before pushing the “Add Entry to Calendar” button. Keep in mind, however, that when you want to update or delete a calendar entry, you’ll need to do so for each individual class.
