Writing Demonstrations

Conducting Boolean Searches

Narrowing a Search with AND

The Boolean search term AND allows you to tell a search engine to locate all records containing one keyword and another. This allows you to obtain a smaller number of results than you would obtain by searching for records containing either keyword. For example, you could search for all records containing the keywords computers AND writing. Instead of obtaining records that contain either the word computers or the word writing, you can obtain only the records that contain both words.

This demonstration begins with a simple search on the Google search site and then contrasts that search with a Boolean AND search on Google's advanced search page. Google is a leading Web Search Site, located on the Web at http://www.google.com. You can begin this demonstration by clicking on the Begin button.
