When the Author's Name Is Mentioned in the SentenceWhen you mention the author's name in the sentence, include one parenthetical note directly following the name. In this note, include the year of publication. Place a second parenthetical note directly following the cited material. In this second note, include the page number, preceded by the abbreviation "p." (or chapter number preceded by the abbreviation "chap.", etc). When the citation falls at the end of the sentence, the parenthetical note precedes the end punctuation (period). Philip Thomas (1997) attempts to dispel this notion that "psychiatry, like medicine, [is] an area of knowledge unsullied by the complications of society and politics" (p. 4).
