University Composition Program

CO150 Common Syllabus, 2008-2009

Tuesday, October 7

Day 13 (Tuesday, October 7)

Lesson Objectives

Students will

  • become familiar with Morgan Library resources
  • learn to search library resources, such as SAGE, Academic Search Premier and Lexis-Nexis.

Connection to Course Goals. Research and collaboration are essential skills within academic and nonacademic communities; today’s class should also help student groups focus their work with your guidance.

Activities

Attendance, introduction, and instruction

Begin class by reminding students why you’ve brought them to the library today.  You might preview the homework (bring at least one library source and one new annotation to class next time) to encourage involvement today. Finally, introduce the librarian who will be conducting today’s class, and hand over the reins.

Library Instruction

The librarian will introduce students to library resources and allow time for them to conduct searches on their inquiry question.

Tip. Few if any of your students will have prior experience with a large research university library, so they will need ongoing help to make the most of Morgan Library's offerings.

Collect homework, conclude class and assign homework

Ask students to turn in the annotation they brought to class today.  Remind students to check the Writing Studio for specifics on homework.

Homework

  • Bring at least one library source to class next time as well as at least one new annotation.
